Module III - Blog It!

No matter where you are - we’re glad you’re here!

applicant.
Musings
This module has provided an introduction to cultures in Alaska with a particular emphasis on the cultures of the indigenous population.
The essential questions have asked you to think more broadly and deeply about culture rather than to simply learn discreet facts about individual cultures.

As with all the modules, you have been asked to explore and examine connections, in this case between cultures and the environment, as well as between cultures themselves.

EXPLAIN
This is where you take a few moments to review the various sections of Module III and select two questions to respond to in your blog. One Essential Question and one Examine Question.
  • CLICK HERE to see a basic template for your blog response.
  • CLICK HERE to review the Basic Weekly Blog Assignment.
  • Be sure to include the question you are responding to at the top of each response.
  • Please also include the Module number in the title of your blog post.
As the topics in this module open up so many areas worthy of discussion, more options for your questions have been added here.

Beyond the Basics

EXTEND
As an alternative, your third question response could be from the Extend list on this page - or one of your design on a topic that you would like to discuss.
Prior to writing your responses, please reference the question you are answering by including it as a bold heading in your post.

1. Anchorage is the largest village in Alaska; there are more Alaska Natives living in Anchorage than in any single village in the state.  What do you think this means for the sustainability of a Native cultural identity?
2. What does it mean to be called Alaskan? Is this a cultural term? Does that label reflect individual or generalized socio-cultural behaviors?   Describe any unifying Alaska cultural features.  How do you identify yourself?
3. Have you had personal experiences in Alaska for which culture (in its various manifestations) has been a factor?  Describe and explain.
4. To what degree do you think the concept of culture, and Alaskans' interpretation of that term, affects the public discourse and perspectives on issues such as land ownership and management, resource allocation, resource development, relationships (between Alaskans and with those outside of Alaska), allocation of public services,  and environment stewardship?
